Initially one of the most successful of the plantation economies, due to it's rich soil and abundant rainfall, the island thrived on growing and exporting sugar, giving it the deserved title of SUGAR CITY ST KITTS. which has stayed with it to this day.
Due to the globalization of world economies regarding trade, the sugar industry no longer proved profitable and the government closed it in 2005. Fortunately this charming island of 68 square miles happen to be the last of the decent sized islands to engage in moderate sustainable development by undertaken a much more diversified approach to its economic future; from the restoration and conversion of historic plantations.
